Mlm and Network Marketing Leadership - First Level - Influence
Mlm and Network Marketing Leadership
The first level of influence – Position.
One of the biggest problems in the mlm and network marketing industry is retention. People move from company to company or just quit all together. The inability to lead others is one of the biggest problems contributing to this.
Many lose those they sponsor because they never advance above the level of influence called position. When you bring another person into your business, you are their “sponsor”. This means you are the one who introduced them to the business. What it doesn’t mean is that they will then follow everything you tell them to do.
Why is that? Why don’t people just get on board and start to do what you say?
That’s a great question. People only follow you to the degree that you build a relationship with them and gain their trust. The first level of influence, position, is not enough. Remember, you are not this person’s boss. They’ve volunteered to be here and are looking to see if you will lead them to where they want to go. John Maxwell mentions several differences between a boss and a leader. (The following is an excerpt from Developing the Leader Within You – pg. 5-6)
The boss drives his workers; the leader coaches them.
The boss depends on authority; the leader on goodwill.
The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm.
The boss says “I”; the leader, “we.”
The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.
The boss knows how it’s done; the leader shows how.
The boss says “go”; the leader says “let’s go!”
Do you see the difference? If you want success in your business and want to see your people succeed, you must lead and not boss people. This is one of the hardest things about building a business in network marketing or mlm. Your group is a volunteer army. If you fail to lead them above the position level, they will look for someone who will.
How does this apply to your business? How can you apply this right away? You need to start changing your language immediately. Instead of referring to people you sponsor as your downline or personally sponsored, you need to start calling them your team or group. Instead of saying “my” business you should say “our” business.
There is a huge difference in perspective when you begin to realize that success will only come when you not only lead others, but teach them to do the same.
See you on the next lesson.
